Hello! I am happy to announce I have a few copies of SadFrog 2022 Calendar left!!!
What you get:
12 months of SadFrog adventures. Each detachable picture is a usable POSTCARD!!!! - OR - you can frame it in a 4" x 6" frame. AND, the back of each calendar section is a spot for notes.
I have spent the last 2 months collaging, watercoloring, and graphic designing SadFrog scenarios. Why? My dog died. I changed my job. My landlord is selling the place I've lived in for 18 years. I got a real therapist for the first time in 20 years. I started taking graphic design classes online. I feel insecure.
What do I do when I feel vulnerable and insecure? I draw a sad frog. And do you know what the sad frog did for me? IT MADE ME SO HAPPY. I GIGGLE with delight every time. I really needed that. When I started sharing SadFrog, other people felt my giddyness. Maybe it made them giddy? Maybe it made them smile too. That's what I would like to share. I want to share all the smiles and all the silly.
My dogs name was Daisy. There is SO much of Daisy in these illustrations, and I thank her every day for being the weird, quirky dog she was.
The Details:
The pictures here are from the first printed proof of January. Following is February, March, April, May, June and July. The entire 12 month calendar will be coil-bound at the top, with a loop to hang from. Every month will include observed holidays. All calendars will be printed mid-October and shipped to you the first week of November 2021. Pre-ordering ensures delivery before the winter holidays.

The Cypress and the Snow
There is a Cypress tree called Blue Ice Cypress. I love designing with it. It is exactly what it sounds like, crackly blue ice, the kind you would find in Alaska. (Or at least that’s where my imagination goes.) Texturally it is a dream and the colors make me want to swim in it. Naturally, it made its way into my winter holiday card along with snowy grace from the Star of Bethlehem flower. Happy Winter!

Blackberries In Summer
So many things say Summer in the Pacific Northwest. Swimming holes, Dahlias, camping, perfectly blue skies and always-the blackberries. Blackberries are everywhere here and you can forage them from almost anywhere. Last summer I took myself on a solo vacation to a tiny cabin in Yelm, Washington. I figured when I got there I would pick some wildflowers to paint but when I arrived everything had already dried up. The only flower blooming was the delicate petals of blackberry vines. I spent 3 days diving into the river, collecting rocks, and painting blackberries. This card is the result of that perfect time in summer.

Anemones
I follow a lot of artists on social media and am always astounded by the abundance of talent. I see exquisite representations of Anemones all the time but I myself have always been very intimidated to take this flower on. Challenge accepted! One day coming home from work at a flower shop, a handful of anemones in tow, I sat down and said “Today is the day. Today I will add my version to the thousands of others. Today, I can do this.” And I did, and it felt amazing.

Poppy Pods
While working in a Floral Shop we had the absolute pleasure of picking flowers out of Martha's van. Martha would come down from her farm in Hood River once a week, open the doors of her van and piles of beauty would spill out. Each stem was hand-picked and carefully cleaned. My favorite, (is there really just one?) was when the Poppy Pods made their way to us and for weeks I would marvel at their odd shapes and endless combinations of blues, greens, and yellows. This card was originally painted 18”x24”. That painting still hangs on my wall today and always makes me smile, thinking of you.

Watercolor Botanical Print: With Love Card
Tillandsia
Architecturally speaking Tillandsias (airplants) are pretty stunning. The way they live and thrive is equally as interesting. Airplants do have roots but unlike most plants it is not how they get their nutrients, nor do they need soil to grow. Instead, they have tiny scales called trichomes that act like a sponge, wicking up moisture and nutrients from the air. They can live attached or hanging from just about anything and can be found within a vast range of places from deserts to tropical rain forests. Dramatic and adaptive!

Some days while wandering around my neighborhoods certain plants and flowers will pop out, while others fade away into the backdrop. On my walks I gather all of this visual information and make bouquets in my head. Last year, when it was almost Mother’s Day and I had no new card (Blasphomy!) I kept noticing these flowers and this color combination. It reminded me of my Mother. Elegant, vibrant, peaceful and intricate. For you Mom.

Yes friends, I have found yet another hobby. ROCKS. I love spending time with rocks. These tiny capsules of history and nature hold and unleash secrets at the same time. Looking at their intricacies of line, shape, divots, color, and holes is fun for me. And then of course, I say “I MUST PAINT THESE ROCKS.” Not only is it fun but it is also very calming.
One game I like to play on river banks I call “Cairn Demolition”. It sounds way more destructive than it actually is. Start with a larger flat base rock. Add a second rock on top of the base. Then add a third (and so on if you prefer) to the second rock creating a tidy little stack. b a l a n c e . From far away, with a handful of pebbles as ammunition, try to knock down the cairn by throwing your pebbles at it. Hours of simple fun!

Each handmade box measures 51/2" x 51/2" x 21/2". The wood is reclaimed fence wood from a local salvage store here in Portland, Oregon. There is a sawtooth hanger installed in the back for the perfect placement in your special spot. Clear acrylic in the front protects from dust and is removable for cleaning by sliding it out of the slot on top.
